Hello, WanderSnap family! This past week, we’ve settled into Hillsdale, Kansas, a small town that has quickly captured our hearts. From the serene beauty of Hillsdale Lake to the cozy local spots, it’s been a fantastic start to our latest adventure. Join us as we recount our first week!
Exploring Hillsdale Lake
Our adventure began at the stunning Hillsdale Lake. With over 4,500 acres of water surrounded by peaceful landscapes, this place is a dream for families who love nature. We spent a few hours fishing, hiking, and taking in the breathtaking views. The dogs had a blast splashing around the shoreline, and we think they might be ready for a second career as champions of water retrieval.

The tranquility of the lake is nothing short of magical. Not only is it a fantastic fishing spot, but it’s also a haven for kayakers and paddleboard enthusiasts. Watching the sun setting over the water was a highlight, with golden rays reflecting beautifully on the surface.
Finding Hidden Trails
One of my favorite aspects of RV life is discovering hidden gems, and Hillsdale State Park has some amazing trails. We laced up our hiking boots, packed a picnic, and explored the Russell and Bur Oak Trails, which are perfect for leisurely strolls.

During our walk, we were fortunate to spot wildlife, including a couple of shy deer in the distance. The vibrant fall colors on the trees added a splash of color, making it an ideal setting for family photos. We were impressed to see the landscape come alive.
Local Eateries and Friendly Faces
After our outdoor adventures, we needed to refuel, and Hillsdale did not disappoint. We discovered a few local eateries that have quickly become our favorites. One of the highlights is Muddy Waters Bar & Grill, where their juicy burgers have received rave reviews. According to local diners, they are known for their catfish, which is a must-try!

What stands out the most about dining here is the welcoming staff. They greeted us like old friends and shared stories about their town and favorite dishes, truly making us feel part of the community. We even enjoyed fresh takes on classic dishes, such as their house-made coleslaw, which paired perfectly with our meals.
We also found a cozy coffee shop that has become a favorite spot for working on our blog and editing photos. Sipping on locally brewed coffee while typing away at my laptop has become a cherished routine along with staying warm & cozy in our 2025 Campsite Reserve CJ26.
Embracing Small-Town Kansas
Hillsdale has reminded us of the charm of small-town living. There’s an inviting, relaxed vibe here that makes us feel right at home. We’ve chatted with locals at the lake, met fellow travelers at the RV park, and picked up valuable tips on unmissable places to explore in Kansas.

Everyone seems to know everyone, making it easy to connect and feel part of the community. We’re excited to venture further and discover more treasures that small-town Kansas has to offer.
Wrapping Up Our First Week
As we close out our first week in Hillsdale, Kansas, we feel so grateful for this memorable experience. The combination of breathtaking landscapes, delightful local eateries, and a warm community spirit has set a lovely tone for our adventures ahead.
We’re eager to share more about our time in this charming area and hope our journey encourages you to discover hidden gems in your own backyard. Until next time, WanderSnap family!
